Day 296: Phobias

A lot of people have phobias, things and situations that they are afraid of and would rather avoid. The thing with phobias is that very few people know the correct names for them except for claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces). So I today I’ve decided to google the most common fears and learn their proper names:

  • Agoraphobia – fear of open spaces. I didn’t even know that this was a fear let alone a common one. I’ve heard of people confining themselves to their homes but I didn’t know it was due to fear of open spaces.
  • Acrophobia – fear of heights. This was a fear that I used to have. Especially with my constant flying, I am very happy that I’m no longer acrophobic.
  • Pteromerhanophobia – fear of flying. I want to start by saying that I don’t even know how to pronounce this, and second I didn’t know this was different from the fear of heights.
  • Trypanophobia – fear of needles. As long as I’m looking away from the needle I’m good when it comes to blood tests. However, one quick glance and I feel faint.

They say the best way to overcome a fear is to face it. It certainly worked with me and my fear of heights, but in small doses. Even now if there is a height situation that I’m unfamiliar with, I still get woozy the first few times. E.g. the first time I used the see-through glass lifts at work.
